Criteria for Listing on the Roster

THE OFFICIAL ROSTER OF DISTINGUISHED AWARDS

OF

THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF DISTINGUISHED AWARDS

CRITERIA FOR LISTING ON THE ROSTER

(Originally adopted,1999; amended 2014)

The "Official Roster of Distinguished Awards" was first established by the International Congress of Distinguished Awards in 1999 as a pioneering effort to select from the tens of thousands of awards given regularly around the world those that merit unique distinction as the most important.  And, thereby, those that should be both recognized and honored as the best practitioners of the art and craft of award-giving and whose laureates should also be reverred as the world's most gifted, creative, and accomplished individuals.  The laureautes of these awards constitute that cadre of individuals worldwide who have done the most to shape our world today--its arts, humanities, science, technology, engineering, religions, and its most notable humanitarian efforts.

The inclusion of an award or award program on this unique list of worldwide honor is a formal validation by the International Congress of Distinguished Awards (ICDA) that the award meets ICDA’s criteria for listing.  Any award thus designated may, in the judgment of ICDA, be considered to be:

 (1)   One of the world’s most important awards;

 (2)   The award’s recipients “distinguished world laureates”; and

 (3)   The recipient’s institution (university, society, research center) the employer of a “distinguished award laureate.”

Listing on the official roster is generally limited to awards that have exhibited or substantially meets most or all of the following characteristics:

  • presents a minimum cash prize of $100,000 US or is recognized as the preeminent award in its field of focus;
  • that is presented on a recurring basis (awards do not become eligible until they have first been presented and lose their eligibility if they are not presented on a regular basis—annually, biennially, triennially, or quadrennially);
  • that has a broad-based  essentially open nomination process;
  • that has an independent, merit-based evaluation and selection process involving well-qualified jurors;
  • that has a commensurate level of administrative support to accomplish its mission;
  • that recognizes achievements of national and international importance; and
  • that is committed to promoting knowledge and understanding for all people.

Award programs listed on ICDA’s Official Roster are encouraged to inform their trustees, recipients, and audiences that their awards have been thus listed and that their award recipients are deemed to be “distinguished world laureates.”  Listed awards are authorized and encouraged to acknowledge their inclusion in this "Official Roster of Distinguished Awards" in their announcements and publications.

The ICDA OFFICIAL ROSTER OF DISTINGUISHED AWARDS is posted on the ICDA website at www.icda.org under the heading ICDA Official Roster.  Beginning in 2006 the Official Roster became an online and continuously updated listing of awards.  ICDA invites comments, suggestions, and corrections for the Roster addressed to ICDA@icda.org .

In addition ICDA maintains a database on all awards listed on the Official Roster for use in preparing reports and commentary on the world of awards.  These data and reports are available to members of ICDA as a privilege of membership and to non-members on an individual fee basis.   For additional information on membership and services contact ICDA as follows:
